Wanted in the U.S. for treason

By ASHRAF KHAN, Associated Press Writer Ashraf Khan, Associated Press Writer – 23 mins ago
KARACHI, Pakistan – The American-born spokesman for al-Qaida has been arrested by Pakistani intelligence officers in the southern city of Karachi, two officers and a government official said Sunday as video emerged of him urging U.S. Muslims to attack their own country.

The arrest of Adam Gadahn represents a major victory in the U.S.-led battle against al-Qaida and will be taken as a sign that Pakistan, criticized in the past for being an untrustworthy ally, is cooperating more fully with Washington. It follows the recent detentions of ...

Posted: nonsequitur @ Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:02 am
The Taliban's top military leader, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, has been captured, a senior administration official told CNN late Monday.
This is a "huge deal," CNN National Security Analyst Peter Bergen said. "This guy ... is the number two political figure in the Taliban" to the group's founder, Mullah Muhammad Omar.
Baradar, an Afghan, was also a close associate of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden ahead of the September 11 attacks on the United States.
Baradar was captured several days ago in Karachi, Pakistan, a senior Pakistani intelligence official told CNN Tuesday.
The New York Times reported he was taken into custody during secret joint operation by Pakistani and American intelligence forces, citing American government officials.
The Times also reported that ...

NATO ISAF launches largest offensive of Afghan War
Posted: nonsequitur @ Sat Feb 13, 2010 2:10 am

NATO troops in Afghanistan launched their biggest offensive of the war early Saturday, attacking what they call the last Taliban stronghold in a war-scarred southern province.

Military officials said the offensive—dubbed Operation Moshtarak— got under way at 2 a.m. (4:30 p.m. ET Friday). By about 8 a.m. (10 p.m. ET Friday) two firefights had erupted between the Taliban and U.S. Marines in Marjah.

The offensive turned a main bazaar near the city center into a ghost town after residents were warned to leave the area. NATO forces said they are following a directive not to shoot at civilians, some of whom are still on the streets.

"Insurgents who do not accept the...

One Month Later, Haiti Works to Recover
By Bill Whitaker

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 12, 2010

(CBS) In the shadow of destruction, a sea of survivors - hundreds of thousands in services all over the city - is thankful to be alive.

But the living now inhabit an apocalyptic maze more nightmarish than Hollywood could imagine. Life among the ruins is the new normal. But like the miracle survivors, Haiti is crawling from the wreckage, reports CBS News Correspondent Bill Whitaker.

This was a day of mourning in Haiti. One month ago Friday, the ground swayed and buildings crumbled. According to the latest estimate, 212,000 people died in the earthquake. Three hundred thousand more were hurt. As many as 4,000 required amputation of a limb, but there were also miracles. Two hundred e...
