Sharia law 'could have UK role'
Posted: Nico @ Fri Jul 04, 2008 5:03 am
BBC Friday, 4 July 2008 09:26 UK

Principles of sharia law could play a role in some parts of the legal system, the Lord Chief Justice has said.
Lord Phillips, the most senior judge in England and Wales, said there was no reason sharia law's principles could not be used in mediation.
However, he said this would still be subject to the "jurisdiction of the English and Welsh courts".
Sharia is a set of principles which govern the way many Muslims believe they should live their life.

The Archbishop of Canterbury prompted controversy when he said use of certain aspects of the law "seems unavoidable".
In a speech at the East London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel, Lord Phillips said that sharia suffered from "widespread misunderstanding".

BBCSaturday, 21 June 2008 14:34 UK

Iran has said it considers a military attack on its nuclear facilities by Israel as "impossible".
"Such audacity to embark on an assault against the... territorial integrity of our country is impossible," said spokesman Gholam Hoseyn Elham.
The statement follows reports in the US media that Israeli aerial manoeuvres over the eastern Mediterranean were a possible test-run for a strike on Iran.

Iran insists that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.
It has repeatedly rejected demands to halt enriching uranium, which can be used as fuel for power plants or material for ...

Thousands Feared Dead in China Quake
By JIM YARDLEY

BEIJING — A powerful earthquake struck a mountainous region of western China on Monday, reportedly killing more than 8,500 people, including as many as 5,000 people in a single county, and trapping more than 900 students beneath a collapsed high school as tremors shook buildings throughout China and were felt as far away as Thailand and Vietnam, according to interviews and reports in China’s state media.

The earthquake was the worst to hit China since the Tangshan earthquake of 1976 when more than 240,000 people died.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit in Sichuan Province on Monday afternoon, and the...

Cuba lifts ban on home computers.

04:34 GMT, Saturday, 3 May 2008 05:34 UK

The first legalised home computers have gone on sale in Cuba, but a ban remains on internet access.

This is the latest in a series of restrictions on daily life which President Raul Castro has lifted in recent weeks.
Crowds formed at the Carlos III shopping centre in Havana, though most had come just to look.

The desktop computers cost almost $800 (£400), in a country where the average wage is under $20 (£10) a month.
But some Cubans do have access to extra income, much of it from money sent by relatives living abroad.

Since taking over the presidency in February, Raul Castro has ended a ...

bbc GMT, Monday, 7 April 2008 01:45

The chief strategist for Hillary Clinton's campaign to become the Democratic Party's candidate for the US presidency has resigned.

Mark Penn stepped down after a row over a potential conflict of interest involving his public relations firm.
Mr Penn's company had been employed by the Colombian government to help it pursue a free-trade agreement with the US - a deal Mrs Clinton opposes.

Mrs Clinton is vying with Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination.
They have been fighting a close battle in the continuing state primary election campaign.

The latest count of pledged delegates to the party's ...

Fresh clashes break out in Basra

Wednesday, 26 March 2008, 08:58 GMT

There has been fresh fighting in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, as Iraqi security forces battle Shia militants for a second day.

Police and witnesses report heavy clashes in five districts. More than 40 people are said to have died overall.
Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has given militants 72 hours to lay down their arms or face penalties.

His campaign to "re-impose law" in the city triggered fighting elsewhere in Iraq, and many towns are under curfew.
In Baghdad's Sadr City, clashes continued overnight and civilians are feared to be among at least 14 people killed.
Unrest in...
